Meet the Inventor

John E. Moenning, DDS, MSD

Dr. John E. Moenning grew up in Greenfield, Indiana. He attended Miami University and Indiana University (IU), where he received his undergraduate degree in Biology and Chemistry. He went on to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1983. Dr. Moenning finished a General Practice Residency at IU in 1984 and completed a three-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at IU Medical Center and Methodist Hospital. In 1988, he received his Master of Science degree from the Indiana University School of Dentistry, where he focused his training on orthognathic (jaw) surgery research.

Dr. Moenning’s most well-known achievement is the invention of the revolutionary N2O delivery system, Safe Sedate®. This endeavor has also resulted in four other patents pending, as well as the development of a Post-Anesthetic Care Unit Oxygen/Scavenger Mask for hospitals.

In addition to his success in dentistry, medicine, and product development, Dr. Moenning has published more than 20 journal articles regarding aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery. He has also served on the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Committee on Practice Management and is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor at the IU School of Dentistry. In his free time, he enjoys outdoor activities such as running, fishing, and biking.
